Does anyone know if the Texas Sup Crt started making calls/sending email today?

So far the response of the Tex. Sup. Ct. has been slow. I'm pretty sure that most of the judges do not feel in any hurry to select their interviews. This may be in part due to the fact that they have conference on Monday and Tuesday (which hopefully means they are busy working on cases). I do know that Justice Willet and Medina have made calls and have already held some interviews. Friends of mine have interviews with them on the 26th, though, so I don't think they'll be making exploding offers.

i'm currently a clerk on the court and i can assure you that while we started receiving applications on 9/1, several of the judges have not even begun to look at them. my judge has definitely not gone over any of them. i was hired at the end of october last year, and he told us that he has waited as late as february to hire clerks. anyway, if people are interested in clerking on this court, feel free to ask me questions about it. good luck with all of your applications!

thanks for the info! can you let us know how much the judges on this court take into account GPA? Does it matter if the candidate is otherwise strong (TX connections, journal ed board, top 10 school), if his/her GPA is low?

hmmmmm... i'm not sure how much gpa goes into the mix. it probably depends on the individual judge. i know that's completely not helpful. i *can* tell you that we have clerks from duke, baylor, harvard, texas, boalt, yale, university of houston, michigan, south texas, LSU, cornell, st. mary's, and tx tech. i can also tell you that we get around 200 applications or so per chambers. i really think that a bit of a lower gpa can be counteracted with other things. i think the judges definitely pay attention to what schools the applicants attended. of course, as with any other clerkship, the judges want enthusiasm for research and writing, so if you can emphasize that in your application or during your interview, it would be to your advantage. i wish i could be more helpful! i don't mind answering general or specific questions, so let me know if there is anything else anyone would like to know!

I'm making a flight down from Indiana U. for a clerkship interview this week with a federal district court in TX. I would like to get all of my interviews in the state done Thursday and Friday, so I don't have to make multiple plane trips. Is there anyone at the court I can contact to see if there's any interest at all in interviewing me, so I can keep this to one (expensive) plane ticket, or do I just need to wait it out and fly down again later if I happen to get a call?

as i mentioned, a lot of chambers have not even starting looking through the applications, so it's entirely possible that you'll get calls for interviews after this week. everyone here is pretty laid back, so i don't see any harm in calling and asking if a judge would like to interview you while you're out here. just explain your situation. but don't worry if you don't hear back for a few days! all of the justices are out of the office for most of today for ann richards' memorial service and they're in conference all day tomorrow and possibly wednesday morning.

Justices Wainwright and Brister are still interviewing.

i believe all if not close to all of the judges have begun interviews, but we're still going through applications. if you haven't heard or even haven't applied yet, there are still spots open. my chambers has only hired one of the two.

Any news on Texas Ct. Crim. App. judges?

Hecht has hired one and is still interviewing for the other. Jefferson is done hiring. O'Neill and Wainwright are still interviewing.

Wainwright has hired one clerk, but he is still interviewing for the other.

Brister is still interviewing.

The Second Court of Appeals made (at least some) hiring decisions.

Willett is also still interviewing.

Wainwright is done.

Anonymous said...

Wainwright - do you mean that he is done interviewing, or that he is done hiring?

Anonymous said...

Done hiring.

O'Neill is done hiring.

Hecht is done.

Does anyone know if Medina is done?

Anonymous said...

Medina's staff attorney suggested Medina had made one hire and would not make a decision on the other slot until November. I don't know if he's done interviewing.

Bankruptcy Chief Judge Houser is done hiring.
