I just got a letter from Crooks confirming he received my application and will be interviewing in the "later fall." No letter of confirmation either from the CJ or Prosser.
Does anyone really care where the CJ hired from? We all know her biases to top 30 schools and not even interviewing anyone at a school ranked 31 or below.... Maybe she needs to retire and take her outdated ideas with her....
I'm sorry, you're bitching about Marquette students not having a chance? Never mind the fact that you practically have the Milwaukee alumni market locked up. Do you know how many judges in the state DO hire Marquette grads? A lot.
I go to a far more competitive law school than Marqette, and I've lost out on several clerkships to people on Marquette Law Review. I'm sure they're very bright people, but honestly, if I'd gone to Marquette, I probably could have made law review, too. The competition at my school is far stiffer.
Considering how many people on law review at Marquette have gotten jobs I wanted, despite my being in the top quarter of a top-25 law school, I have no sympathy for you.
Also, on the original question - does anybody know where the CJ hired from? And are any of the justices besides Crooks currently in the decision process? Anybody heard from Court of Appeals judges?
Both Crooks & Prosser have completed all their interviews, but they are both still deciding which candidate they will extend an offer to (assuming that candidate has not gotten snatched up in the interim, of course) last I heard.
I don't know anyone who applied to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, so I don't know the answer to your second question.
Crooks said "hopefully by Thanksgiving." I find that really annoying. Surely he can decide by then. Maybe he just waits that long because he figures people that really want it will hold out for the offer instead of taking something else. But that's a guess with absolutely no basis in fact.
you must be from UW - that judge only invited MU (for a refreshing change from the normal)
Which judge? And why is it a "refreshing change" that a judge would only interview Marquette? Again, I say that plenty of clerkships are given to Marquette students, so it's not like you don't have a chance. Seriously, this prejudice against out-of-staters is getting ridiculous.
Appologies to UW, I should have known that most UW students know the quality of MU through working with us on summer associate programs and internships and know that we are underrated - I should have known that a UW student would not have pulled the "we far better rated" than MU card like you did.
I am not saying that I am better because my law school is ranked higher. I'm just saying that MU students griping about judges not interviewing them is crap because plenty of judges do interview - and hire - MU students. And plenty of judges look at law review before they look at the competitiveness of the school, which gives certain MU students an edge.
Ultimately, it will all work out, and I'm sure we'll all get jobs. But let me just say that as an out-of-stater moving in, the job hunt is very difficult because the state is so dominated by the two schools.
P.S. - I'm not as clueless as you think I am. I've worked with MU students over the summer, too.
Did you interview with Justice Crooks - because your writing sounds like the poster above who called his hiring process "annoying." Let me guess, he is delaying a hiring decision to give in staters (UW and MU) preference?
Nope, not the same person that interviewed with Justice Crooks. That poster's theory seems plausible, though - to give preference to hold outs, not to in-staters. Not even sure how that could give preference to in-staters.
Just got a letter from Prosser that he has finished his hiring process as well (not sure who he hired, but given his religious rotation between Marquette and UW every other year, I would assume he hired someone from UW this year because his current clerk is from Marquette).
Final results look like: two confirmed hires for next year from Marquette (Roggensack and Crooks) and one probable hire from UW (Prosser) with a ?? on the CJ (UW if I had to guess).
FYI, there will be one more hire coming in April after Wilcox's replacement is determined - just watch the election results and send in your packet to the winner of the election.
District III of the Court of Appeals in Wausau might be hiring in the spring.
Hoover and Peterson have decided to keep their clerks for a second year, and Cane is retiring. So, Cane's replacement will be hiring a clerk sometime in early 2007.
Curley (Wis. Ct. App.) was accepting applications, I think the deadline was December 15. It may be worth a call to chambers (along with the other Wis. Ct. App. judges). Sorry, I deleted the email I received, as I had a clerkship already, so I don't have more specifics.
Cane's replacement has been determined as there is only one person running for that court of appeals seat (Barron County Circuit Judge Edward R. Brunner)- if anyone wants to get a jump start on sending clerkship application materials that does not yet have a clerkship, they could call Brunner's chambers to inquire.
Wow, calm down a bit. Brunner hasn't even "technically" been elected yet. Doubt he'll interview until it is perfectly official, although sending in the application now can't hurt so that he can get together a short list for when he is ready to interview.
Re Curley, if she has not called you already, you are not under consideration, so does it really matter if she is done or not?
Of course, I applied to neither, so I have some dispassionate objectivity.
FYI, Marquette Law 3Ls - one of our own that is very loyal to MU is about to be elected to the Supreme Court - if you do not already have a clerkship, you may want to start getting those application packets ready to send in early April to soon to be Justice Ziegler!!

Roggensack hired hers in July
Butler isn't hiring
Bradley and Wilcox aren't hiring either
Anyone heard from Crooks?
nope, not even a confirmation of my application....
I got a confirmation letter from Crooks at the end of August but haven't heard from the CJ or Prosser
I just got a letter from Crooks confirming he received my application and will be interviewing in the "later fall." No letter of confirmation either from the CJ or Prosser.
Crooks emailed today. He's interviewing next week.
Ditto. Anyone know if Crooks makes exploding offers?
Does any know how many people Crooks usually interviews?
I was wondering that as well. No one at my school seems to know for sure.
Anyone heard from Prosser or the CJ?
Per a former WSC Justice, 5-6 interviews is probably the number.
Where did Abrahamson hire from?
Does anyone really care where the CJ hired from? We all know her biases to top 30 schools and not even interviewing anyone at a school ranked 31 or below.... Maybe she needs to retire and take her outdated ideas with her....
Actually she did interview multiple University of Wisconsin students.
Yes, UW is rated at 35, but the statement above on her hiring patterns is true if amended to read 36 or below.....
Has anyone heard from Prosser??
It appears Prosser has not yet started interviewing.
Prosser has interviewed.
Why shouldn't the CJ limit her hiring to the top schools?
Perhaps because there are plenty of very good students at Marquette, for instance, that she summarily ignores.

if only you were correct ...
About which part am I incorrect?
Also, on the original question - does anybody know where the CJ hired from? And are any of the justices besides Crooks currently in the decision process? Anybody heard from Court of Appeals judges?

anyone have any inside info on when Crooks & Prosser will decide?
Crooks said "hopefully by Thanksgiving." I find that really annoying. Surely he can decide by then. Maybe he just waits that long because he figures people that really want it will hold out for the offer instead of taking something else. But that's a guess with absolutely no basis in fact.
yes, that is what he told me too...I have two other judicial interviews, and first come will be first served.
me too, by the time he decides, he might find out half his candidates has accepted offers with judges in the E.D. Wis. and W.D.Wis.
which e.d. judges are currently interviewing?
one district judge and three bankruptcy
which district court judge (sorry about asking this in the state judge section)
you must be from UW - that judge only invited MU (for a refreshing change from the normal)
Just a curiousty question - anyone know how many applications Crooks & Prosser typically get?
Roggensack hired from Marquette.
...back in July, but not posted before....

Not to shoot down some "good theories," but Justice Crooks actually completed his hiring process last week (Marquette).

Has anyone heard if Prosser has hired?
Prosser hired prior to Nov 9 per above - rejection letters went out.
The entire Wisconsin Supreme Court is done until the new justice is elected - then there will be one more opening at that time.

Curley has called to set up interviews.
Any updates on Judge Curley? Has she hired? What about Judge Brunner - when will his selection process begin?
Wow, calm down a bit. Brunner hasn't even "technically" been elected yet. Doubt he'll interview until it is perfectly official, although sending in the application now can't hurt so that he can get together a short list for when he is ready to interview.

Fuck Wisconsin.
Justice-elect Ziegler hired a 2007 grad of Marquette.
