1. England - no longer hiring (has two permanent clerks)
2. Karlton - Hires 2-year law clerks (staggers them, so only one position open every year). Accepting apps this year.
3. Damrell - He has one permanent law clerk and his second is finishing up her second year. May or may not be hiring this year. Check to confirm.
4. Shubb - Accepting apps for 2 positions
5. Levi - done, from what I hear, but check to confirm. He has more than 2 clerks b/c he is Chief (has strange staggered schedule - hires one clerk for May and then the other two for the fall. Has one rules law clerk, but has filled position with former law clerk).
6. Garcia - has reduced case load (no longer does civil L&M, and has one clerk help with criminal). Does not appear to hire regular law clerks, but confirm.
Do the judges who call the first day pretty much complete their calls the first day? I.e. if a judge is listed here as calling, and they didn't call me today, is it over?
I am no expert but I would guess no. Especially since many judges first round of clerks may end up taking other district or circuit clerkships before they get to them, so that they will still have spots available. With Circuit I think its over quicker, but with district you have to give it a couple weeks
I'd suggest that whether an offer is "exploding" or not depends more on the dealine for response rather than the time of offering. Some judges are known for requiring immediate or near immediate (1-2 hours) responses to offers, otherwise the offer is lost. Some law reviews are also known for their "exploding offer" practices.
Got an email from Matz's judicial ass't - "Judge Matz will not be in a position to extend you an offer and is therefore unable to schedule an interview." Artful.
A friendly reminder from a current law clerk....i am sure none of you have done so bc you are reading the blog...but try not to call chambers and ask when the Judge is going to start making calls or calling to say you are extremely interested. I can tell you we get 25+ calls a day and to be honest it really does not help you.
Some judges are just a little slower than others. I work in NDCA and we still have not looked at the apps. We've been pretty busy w/ our case load.
According to a staff person in his chambers, Judge Takasugi (C.D. Cal.) will not be hiring a clerk for the 2007-2008 term. (I believe he has a permanet clerk.)
"We have received your application for a clerkship in Judge Consuelo B. Marshall's chambers in the Central District of California. At this time we are hiring for the Fall of 2008. Please let me know your interest in being considered for a position at this time. Also, if you have already accepted a position please let me know."
i would guess some magistrates, maybe, if you're willing to do that- otherwise i was told that there are going to be at least two new appointees on in the CD this year, so that would be another chance. good luck!! (i think i'll probably be in the same boat as you...)
I'm a 2L so this info is useless to me but I wanted to pass it on to those of you who are still looking for a clerkship. Judge Hayes (S.D. Cal.) just (9/29/06) posted this notice:
although, maybe i'm wrong. what i heard was "judge jenkins won't be hiring again until august of 07." but i suppose that might mean he is going to hire in august of 07 for an opening in september 07. but really, that's a pretty slender reed. i'm just adding it for the sake of completeness.

Anyone know anything about Conti?
Conti hires late. Don't expect a call in the near future.
Percy Anderson is emailing.
Alsup anyone?
Is Fogel done calling?
Anyone know anything about Cooper (CDCA)?
The questions just clutter the page. People will post if they know. Chill.
Easy for you to say, you've probably been called.
Jenkins (NDCA) is not reviewing applications yet and will probably start his hiring in about a month
Anyone know about Hamilton or Wilken?
Judge Pfaelzer (C.D. Cal) will likely not be reviewing any applications until next Spring or Summer for the 2007-2008 term.
Burrell (E.D. Cal) called
Judge Alsup has booked all interviews.
so has cooper
One of my recommenders told me Hamilton is not hiring. I haven't heard from Wilken
Judge Morrow has booked her interviews but Judge Feess has not
Does anyone know anything about Judge Lloyd in San Jose? (what it is like to work for him, etc.)

anyone know if matz gives exploding offers?
Manella?
Manella is now on the CA court of appeals
what's an exploding offer?
Are people not posting or have quite a few judges just not called yet?
Percy Anderson is scheduling interviews.
Any word on Fees? Anybody heard from him?
Feess is a finicky, hard-nosed character. I think I already have a rejection from him in my pile. I'll check later today and re-post if so.
an "exploding offer" is when judges make offers during the interview (rather than calling back at a later time) so you're kind of put on the spot.
Schiavelli is interviewing.
Got an email from Matz's judicial ass't - "Judge Matz will not be in a position to extend you an offer and is therefore unable to schedule an interview." Artful.

yes, and some judges really are still calling- so if you haven't been called yet, there's still a chance!
Otrero is done.
Could the clerks and others out there who know of judges still reviewing or not yet reviewing applications please post who these judges are? Thanks!
Which judges are still looking? I know Synder is because she was in NY during the interview days. Jenkins hasn't started yet either. Who else?
According to a staff person in his chambers, Judge Takasugi (C.D. Cal.) will not be hiring a clerk for the 2007-2008 term. (I believe he has a permanet clerk.)
It appears that Patel and Wilken are done (on FLCIS)
Marshall's hiring for 2008-2009 already. Geeze.
"We have received your application for a clerkship in Judge Consuelo B. Marshall's chambers in the Central District of California. At this time we are hiring for the Fall of 2008. Does anyone have info about judges in the S.D. Cal. (Huff, Gonzalez, Miller, Whelan)?
Huff and Gonzales have interviewed, but to my knowledge, not made any decisions.
Huff has hired one. Not sure if she is hiring two or not this cycle.
Wilson (C.D. Cal.) has hired at least one.
Has anyone heard from Karlton (EDCA)?
How reliable is the information on Huff? Do you know what school she hired from? Thanks...
Has anyone heard from Conti?
Karlton is interviewing 6, and telling people later this week.
Cooper is done.

I believe Huff is hiring two...
Percy Anderson (C.D. Cal) has hired one, and has one more spot.
Anyone have any additional information on C.D. Cal?
Anyone know if Shubb (E.D. Ca) is hiring, or if he is done?
Shubb hired at least one.
Is Gonzalez done or is she still deciding?
Gonzalez is done.
I can confirm that Gonzalez is done - she just sent out notices via email that the position has been filled.
What is the deal with Hayes? Has he interviewed/hired anyone? His listing on FLCIS indicates he hires late in the process - like March??
I wouldn't trust FLCIS--call chambers.
Does anyone know what schools Gonzalez's clerks are from?
Where did Fogel hire from?
Shubb and Karlton are done (E.D.).
does anyone have any feess updates?
Guilford is done. One from Berkeley, one from Harvard.

Huff is Done; Burrell is done.
let's face it. everyone is done. we're losers.
Yes, we are...spoke to Whyte's chambers today--he's done. Don't know/didn't ask where he hired from.
anyone know from which schools Lew hired?

Jenkins is done, per the guy who answered the phone in his chambers.
although, maybe i'm wrong. what i heard was "judge jenkins won't be hiring again until august of 07." but i suppose that might mean he is going to hire in august of 07 for an opening in september 07. but really, that's a pretty slender reed. i'm just adding it for the sake of completeness.
Any word on Anderson?
Is Wilken definitely done?
Per FLCIS Wilken is done.

Yes: you dont want to work for armstrong--her chambers have a revolving door. clerks leave miserable every 4 months or so.
what are the reasons?
well, crazy or not, has she interviewed already?

news on armstrong?
anyone know if burns (SD) even hires temporary law clerks? he is on OSCAR, but not sure
I called to Burns' chambers, and the posting on OSCAR is faulty, as he has career clerks.
Judge Major (S.D. Cal.) has hired a clerk for the 2007-2008 term. Her other clerk is career.
