Judge Kleinfeld has hired two law clerks for the 2007-2008 term but is still seeking a 3rd. He does not follow the hiring plan, so submit your applications anytime. If your faculty won't give you letters before the plan permits, apply anyway and list references.
Just wondering...if the application process officially starts 9/5, and schools are not sending applications until then, how could it be that judges are done hiring???
Yes, yes, we know that Kozinski breaks the cartel and hires early. But three 2L's? Do you mean rising 3L's who, one year from now, will have completed law school? Or do you really mean 2L's, who won't be clerking for Kozinski for another two years?
Umm...just recently read an article by Aldisert where he bemoans judges who don't follow the plan...and his office is already making contact, ahead of the plan. Huh.
I applied for clerkships a couple of years ago while I was in school. I wasn't successful and I'm now working at a firm. What are my chances of getting a clerkship now?
Paez sent out emails early this morning - he's only hiring one clerk because he gave an offer last year to someone for the other spot in 2007. I'm pretty sure that if you haven't heard from him already, you won't, because he isn't interviewing very many people since it's just one spot.
Last year I got a call at 4pm. And some of the westcoast judges I applied didn't even look at applications until later. I don't want to give you a false sense of optimism, but it's not necessarily over, so don't jump off a bride or anything. Also, there are still unconfirmed judges out there.
sorry to key harping on B. Fletcher, it's not that I don't trust the info. but I'd like confirmation. Have any 3Ls gotten a call from Fletcher's chamgers?
it seems like quite a few judges haven't made calls yet. is it just that their calls haven't been reported here, or are they waiting? in other words, is it all over, or are there still judges who haven't made their interview decisions yet?
i understand that Rawlinson in NV waits quite a while until making calls. for others, the people who received calls probably just haven't posted on this blog.
I know someone who clerked for Rawlinson. She usually doesn't hire until after the first of the year, though it appeared that this year she was accepting applications earlier. Not sure if that indicates a change in habit.
EVERY Judge in Pasadena has already made their calls. (I called chambers this morning to try to schedule additional interviews).
If you want to canvas for more, it can't hurt, but it probably helps to already have your foot in the door in the 9th Circuit. Several times the people in chambers wanted to know about my other interview before they'd pull my file. The best I got was, "we may get back to you."
"Judge Silverman has three open positions for next year."
Judge Silverman currently has two career clerks and two term clerks, so unless one of the career clerks is planning to leave (which I suppose is possible), this statement isn't accurate...
According to chambers, Judge Kleinfeld is still looking through applications and it may take him another month or so to fill the one vacancy remaining.
Judge Bea's FLCIS notice states he prefers applicants with trial and appellate experience. Could someone tell me if the one(s) he has hired so far for 2007-08 are practicing attorneys?
When a post says a judge is "done" (e.g., Thompson, Bea), does that mean the judge has finished deciding and communicated all offers? Or does it just mean the judge is done interviewing?
You would think that when you spend $500 to interview with a judge in person, they would at least have the decency to tell you they decided not to hire you, and that they would try to do it promptly.

Anyone know if newly confirmed CA judges Ikuta and Smith are hiring, or how to contact their chambers?
Smith has already hired for 06-07, but I don't think he has started reviewing applications for 07-08 yet.
Hall is interviewing, but will not make offers until the end of summer
Ikuta is now interviewing, but I do not know how to contact his chambers.
Hall has finished hiring for 2007-08.
Judge Pregerson's clerks have told me that he is not interviewing (even graduates) yet, and that he tends to interview late in the year.
Kozinski is interviewing.
Ikuta has hired at least one clerk already for the 07-08 term.
Fisher is interviewing (but possibly only graduates.) He says that he will not make any offers until he finishes interviewing in the fall.
Graber is done
tallman is done.
Kozinski is done.
Just wondering...if the application process officially starts 9/5, and schools are not sending applications until then, how could it be that judges are done hiring???
Law school graduates are not subject to the plan and can apply at any time.
Kozinski just hired three 2Ls, early.

Three rising 3Ls, sorry. They are from Stanford, Yale, and Texas.
Callahan is done
Callahan is done
Ikuta and Alarcon are no longer reviewing apps according to OSCAR, so they might be done already.
Wardlaw's chambers has made some preliminary calls to gauge interest, but the judge will be abiding by the hiring plan dates.
Bybee was making calls to grads
aldisert's clerks are sending emails to gauge interest and set up phone calls with the clerks.
Reinhardt has been 'informally' interviewing for months. If you haven't already heard from him, you won't.
This is a comment to test the RSS feed.
Aldisert is Third, not Ninth Circuit.
Umm...just recently read an article by Aldisert where he bemoans judges who don't follow the plan...and his office is already making contact, ahead of the plan. Huh.
Does anyone know about Berzon?
Berzon has already hired two clerks (hired one in the last cycle and hired a recent graduate), but still has two positions.
I applied for clerkships a couple of years ago while I was in school. I wasn't successful and I'm now working at a firm. What are my chances of getting a clerkship now?
A number of judges like to hire people with legal experience.
Ikuta is done hiring for 2007-08.
Do you know where Berzon's clerks came from?
berzon's clerks came from hell.... oh, wait, that's where they are going.
Betty Fletcher (Seattle) interviewed some grads but she said that she was waiting until she interviewed the 3Ls before she would make offers.
Are you sure about Fletcher? I think she has already hired three clerks.
Betty Fletcher is done hiring, this information comes from a former clerk who has spoken to her recently.
Berzon's that bad?
B Fletcher done hiring in that she's made her choices, but still waiting on following through w/ the call & interview dance?
or done hiring in that people have accepted offers?
Fisher has sent emails of interest.
berzon is supposed to be great to work for. somebody's probably just bitter about not getting an interview or offer.
I have heaqrd nothing but great things about clerking for Judge Berzon.
Judge Hawkins has hired two 3Ls - one from Columbia and one from Stanford
Thomas is calling
Berzon sent out e-mails at noon (EDT) to schedule interviews
Clifton has sent emails.
Rymer has started calling
Bybee is calling
Reinhardt and W. Fletcher have been calling.
D. Nelson, Tashima, and W. Fletcher have called or e-mailed
Where are you all getting your information? Current clerks or from applicants receiving calls/emails?
Fisher is calling
we're all current 3Ls who are getting the calls/emails.
Reinhardt & W. Fletcher info is from an applicant receiving calls (from both) and an email (from Fletcher, sent early this morning).
any word on Paez?
anything from oscannlain?
paez emailed and started calling.
oscannlain has set up interviews for DC apparently
so O'Scannlain is flying east to interview from DC? Or is he there are business and is being nice and making things easy for eastcoast applicants?
the latter as I understand it.
Word on Robert R. Beezer?
is anyone still getting calls from judges? or is the madness over?
i got a call about 15 minutes ago. appellate judge, but not in 9c.
The silence is deafening.
this is how the world ends...not with a bang, but a whimper.
so if we have not gotten a call yet, it is over?
Paez sent out emails early this morning - he's only hiring one clerk because he gave an offer last year to someone for the other spot in 2007. I'm pretty sure that if you haven't heard from him already, you won't, because he isn't interviewing very many people since it's just one spot.
Is Berzon done?

Any word on Canby?
McKeown is calling
Noonan is calling

Has anyone heard from Chief Justice Schroeder?
sorry to key harping on B. Fletcher, it's not that I don't trust the info. but I'd like confirmation. Have any 3Ls gotten a call from Fletcher's chamgers?
Any word on Bea
what about Browning?
Bea has made some calls.
Which days is O'Scannlain going to be interviewing in D.C.?
i called Schroeder. she won't be in chambers on Thurs, Sept 21, according to the person who answered the phone.
Any word on Deiznoughts?
wonder if o'scannlain's trip to dc has anything to do with this: http://judiciary.senate.gov/hearing.cfm?id=2071
Judge Berzon is still calling
Bybee is still calling
Yes, I would not be surprised if Judge O'Scanlain will be at the hearings. He's on the record as pro-split, and testified at the hearings last year.
anyone heard from Wardlaw?
Wardlaw made calls today for Thursday interviews only.
for those who got 9th circuit interviews, how many did you get and with whom are you interviewing?
anyone know how many slots Silverman has?
anyone know how Silverman makes offers? exploding? after interviewing all/some?
Judge Silverman has three open positions for next year. He has filled his interview slots.
Silverman's just interviewing on Thurs, right?
Anyone know about Thomas, Trott, or Nelson in ID and MT?
Thomas made all his calls yesterday. He'll be sitting in CA during the interviews.
it seems like quite a few judges haven't made calls yet. is it just that their calls haven't been reported here, or are they waiting? in other words, is it all over, or are there still judges who haven't made their interview decisions yet?

Gould only has 2 slots. He made a few calls yesterday.
Beezer is calling
Rehnquist is interviewing.
Has Wallace or Schroeder made calls?
I was told that Schroeder usually waits and doesn't rush into the madness...
Thomas already scheduled all his interviews
Browning's clerk told me that he is still reviewing apps, assessing his clerk needs and has not yet made calls.
Did Browning's clerks say when they thought the judge would extend offers?
Canby made calls Friday evening.
When did Canby schedule interviews for? Thursday? Fraiday?
Trott finished hiring.
Browning's clerk didn't say when they thought they would be done reviewing...sorry. Hopefuly soon.
Anyone know anything about what a clerkship with Farris might be like?
Clerking with Farris = clerking with a phone. He's NEVER around (multiple houses around the world he lives in).
"Judge Silverman has three open positions for next year."
Judge Silverman currently has two career clerks and two term clerks, so unless one of the career clerks is planning to leave (which I suppose is possible), this statement isn't accurate...
Thanks for Farris post..Do you know if its decent substantive work otherwise or if clerks have been frustrated?
thanks for the Judge Silverman info!
do you know if Judge Silverman gives exploding offers?
Is there any further info on Pregerson?
Wardlaw has hired 2 grads already.
Pregerson won't be looking at applications for at least another week, according to his clerk
How about Goodwin?
anybody heard anything about smith?
Smith (Pasadena) made calls last week, but I don't know for how many positions.
Just talked to Rawlinson's chambers. They don't start interviewing until after Jan. 1.
does judge thomas give exploding offers?
One of Judge Silverman's career clerks is planning to leave, so he has three slots open...
Is Silverman's career clerk leaving now, so as to create a vacancy for the 06-07 term, or are they leaving next fall at the start of the 07-08 term?
Any word on Judge Wood?
Is Canby done hiring? Does anyone know how he handles interviews and offers?
According to chambers, Judge Kleinfeld is still looking through applications and it may take him another month or so to fill the one vacancy remaining.
Hug is finished hiring.
Has anyone interviewed with Canby? Is he interviewing next week?

Where schools did W. Fletcher hire from?

Paez is done.
Judge Bea's FLCIS notice states he prefers applicants with trial and appellate experience. Could someone tell me if the one(s) he has hired so far for 2007-08 are practicing attorneys?
I heard that Judge Bea is hiring a permanent clerk, starting in 2007-08, who clerked for Bea earlier.
Fisher finished hiring on Friday -- I believe 2 Yale, 1 Harvard, 1 Stanford.

Thompson is done.
anyone know if bybee has hired and from what schools
Bybee has hired at least one from Columbia.
what's the word on wardlaw?
Bea is done.
When a post says a judge is "done" (e.g., Thompson, Bea), does that mean the judge has finished deciding and communicated all offers? Or does it just mean the judge is done interviewing?
"done" means: if you haven't already heard, you aren't going to.
Responding to the previous post, at least in the case of Bea, he has filled all of his available spots.
re Bea - what schools?
Bea hired from NYU, UCLA, and Iowa.
Judge Silverman has filled his three positions.
any word on offers from smith in pasadena?

This site's great! I've been using information from here, and I'm keeping track as the schools come in at http://lawclerkaddict.blogspot.com/.
Where did W. Fletcher hire from, and where did B. Fletcher hire from?
william fletcher hired at least one from harvard and one from minnesota.
Chief Judge Schroeder has hired at least one from the University of Arizona
Reinhardt and Thomas hired two from Yale; W. Fletcher and Paez hired one
Anyone know where Wardlaw hired from?
O'Scannlain has hired from Notre Dame.
reinhardt hired 2 harvard
W. Fletcher also hired one from Boalt.
Chief Judge Schroeder has hired at least one from Hastings.
O'Scannlain hired 2 from Harvard, 1 from Notre Dame, 1 from Virginia.
You would think that when you spend $500 to interview with a judge in person, they would at least have the decency to tell you they decided not to hire you, and that they would try to do it promptly.
So, has Schroeder actually started calling?
It appears that Shroeder has hired one from Hastings and one from Arizona
On the discussion of Farris a while ago...
Clerking for him is not "clerking with a phone" and it is substantive work. He does travel a bit but you will see him. He's also extremely nice.
Is Farris done?
